Dumont d’Urville Station French Antarctic Base

Dumont d’Urville (DDU) sits on Petrel Island just off the Adélie Land coast, operated year-round by the French Polar Institute (IPEV). It’s a full research station — labs, dormitories, a medical facility, fuel depot, and communications gear. The surrounding islands are thick with Adélie and emperor penguins, and the Mertz Glacier tongue is visible to the east. Like all Antarctic stations, access is strictly by invitation — logistics run through IPEV and the resupply vessel Astrolabe out of Hobart.

The station supports summer field teams working in Adélie Land and serves as a waypoint for traverse operations heading inland toward Concordia. No public access; all logistics coordinated through official French polar program channels. Summer population peaks around 80–100; winter crew drops to roughly 25. Fuel available for program-affiliated operations only.
