Dry Valleys Taylor Valley Entrance

The McMurdo Dry Valleys are the largest ice-free region on the continent and one of the most extreme desert environments on Earth. Taylor Valley is the most studied of the three main valleys, home to Lake Bonney, Lake Hoare, and Lake Fryxell — all permanently ice-capped but liquid underneath and teeming with microbial life. The terrain is raw: glacial moraines, mummified seal carcasses miles from the coast, and exposed Ferrar Dolomite cliffs that look like the surface of Mars. Annual precipitation is near zero. Wind scours everything else.

Access is exclusively by helicopter from McMurdo Station — no roads reach the valleys, and only permitted scientific personnel operate here. It falls under the Antarctic Specially Managed Area (ASMA) designation, meaning any visit requires Antarctic Treaty permit authorization. Not a drop-in stop, but if you’re running logistics out of McMurdo, this is the geological landmark of the entire continent.
