Darling River — Menindee to Broken Hill Red Desert Corridor Viewpoint

Standing on the western bank of the Darling near Menindee, you’re looking at one of inland Australia’s most confronting landscapes: a silty green ribbon of water dissolving into flat, rust-red gibber stone plains that run all the way to Broken Hill. The contrast is stark and real. In good rain years the river brims and the plains green up briefly; in dry years this stretch looks like the edge of the world. Wedge-tailed eagles work thermals overhead. Road trains haul ore south. The horizon is absolute.

The Barrier Highway (A32) connects Menindee to Broken Hill — about 110 km of flat, mostly sealed road across open station country. The Siberia Track corridor runs parallel and west, through harder, rougher ground. Understand that fuel and water are scarce once you leave Menindee — Broken Hill is your next reliable stop. No shade, no facilities at roadside pull-offs. Spring and autumn are the sane seasons; summer heat here is not a joke.
