Concordia Station French-Italian Antarctic Base

Concordia sits at roughly 3,233 meters on Dome C, deep on the East Antarctic plateau, operated jointly by IPEV (France) and PNRA (Italy). It’s a year-round station with winterover crews, housing science personnel and supporting glaciological, atmospheric, and astronomical research. Resupply comes via traverse from Mario Zucchelli or by air from Hobart. Think of it as the end of the line — nothing between you and the pole but ice.

Access is exclusively via air or overland traverse — no road in any conventional sense. The station is not open to tourists or independent overlanders. Nearest off-continent logistics hub is Hobart, Tasmania. Altitude sickness is a real factor; the thin air and brutal cold (-80°C recorded) make this one of the harshest inhabited points on the planet.
