Cockburn Range — Gibb River Road Eastern Gateway Viewpoint

The Cockburn Range is the wall you see as you descend toward the Pentecost River crossing on the Gibb River Road — a flat-topped sandstone mesa glowing deep red at sunrise and sunset, dropping sheer into the flood plain below. It’s the defining visual landmark of the eastern Gibb, and the view from the river crossing looking southeast is as good as it gets in the Kimberley. El Questro Station sits at the base of this range, and most overlanders camp here at least one night just to stare at it.

Best light is early morning from the Pentecost crossing. The range runs roughly north–south and is accessible via El Questro’s internal tracks — you need a station day pass to explore within the property. Dry season only; the Pentecost River crossing that accesses this country is impassable in the Wet. Check river levels before you attempt the crossing regardless of the season — flash flooding is real.
