Chinguetti Grand Mosque — Ancient Seventh Holy City of Islam and Adrar Desert Landmark
Chinguetti is one of Islam’s seven holy cities and the spiritual capital of the Mauritanian Sahara. The 13th-century mosque with its distinctive ostrich-egg-topped minaret sits at the edge of a town that has been swallowed on three sides by encroaching dunes. Ancient manuscripts, crumbling ksour, and sand-buried streets give this place a weight that’s hard to describe — it feels like the desert is actively reclaiming it. For overlanders finishing the Amogjar Pass run from Atar, this is the natural terminus and the reason you came.
Access from Atar is via piste — roughly 90 km of corrugated sand track and rocky plateau crossing. A local guide is strongly recommended; the route shifts with seasonal sand movement. Non-Muslim visitors can photograph the mosque exterior but entry is restricted. No formal camping inside town — use Auberge Caravane du Sahara or similar guesthouses with courtyard camping. Best visited October through March before the heat becomes genuinely dangerous.
The Sahara's holiest skyline, half-eaten by dunes.
