Chena Hot Springs has been soaking road-weary travelers since 1905, sitting at the end of Chena Hot Springs Road surrounded by dense boreal forest. The main outdoor rock pool maintains a perfect 106°F year-round, steaming like a cauldron even when it’s -40°F outside. The resort offers fuel, food, and basic supplies, plus ice sculptures and aurora viewing in winter. Day use runs about $15, overnight camping available.
The 56-mile drive from Fairbanks on Chena Hot Springs Road is paved but can be icy in winter. Road stays open year-round but requires winter driving skills and gear from October through March. Summer brings mosquitoes but also midnight sun and excellent hiking access into the Chena River State Recreation Area.
