Chamarel Seven Coloured Earth Geological Formation

Point of Interest

This geological oddity displays sand dunes in seven distinct colors — red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow — created by volcanic rocks cooling at different temperatures. The colored earth naturally separates into distinct layers even when mixed, a phenomenon that still puzzles geologists. The 23-hectare site sits in Mauritius’ southwest highlands with viewing platforms and marked trails.

Access via the B104 road to Chamarel village, then follow signs to the park entrance. Open daily with entrance fees required. The colors are most vibrant in morning light, and the site can get crowded with tour buses by midday. Combine with nearby Chamarel Waterfall for a full day trip.
