Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

The Great House rises four stories from the desert floor, built by the Hohokam people around 1350 CE from caliche adobe walls three feet thick. Protected by a modern steel canopy, the structure’s purpose remains unknown — observatory, ceremonial center, or administrative complex. The visitor center displays Hohokam artifacts and explains the sophisticated irrigation system that supported 1,000 people here for centuries.

The monument sits just off State Route 87 between Phoenix and Tucson with paved access and a short interpretive trail around the ruins. Summer temperatures regularly exceed 110°F, making early morning or late afternoon visits essential. The surrounding desert blooms spectacular wildflower displays after winter rains.
