Canning Stock Route — Well 23 Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Well 23 sits in the heart of the Gibson Desert and is one of the better-known stopping points along the Canning Stock Route. The ground is flat red sand packed firm enough for multiple rigs, with low spinifex surrounding a restored heritage well. No facilities whatsoever — this is purely self-sufficient camping. The sense of scale out here is brutal and honest. Expect stars that’ll make you forget what light pollution ever was.

Access is straightforward CSR travel: experienced desert-capable 4WD required, high tyre volume, full recovery kit. Summer temps routinely exceed 45°C — the CSR runs April through September for good reason. No water is guaranteed at any well without prior scouting. Carry minimum 200L for the crossing. Nearest services are hundreds of kilometres north or south.

Heritage well camp, Gibson Desert silence.
