Camping Municipal de Cotahuasi — Cotahuasi Canyon Rim Town Basecamp
Cotahuasi town is the logical basecamp for anyone running the canyon road out of Arequipa. The municipal camping area sits within walking distance of the plaza, market stalls, and small restaurants — meaning you can top off supplies, grab a hot meal, and sort your gear before dropping into the canyon or tackling the high passes above. Expect basic flat ground, minimal facilities, and a no-frills Andean town vibe. Altitude here is around 2,680m, so if you’ve driven straight from the coast, give yourself a night to acclimatize before hammering the technical sections toward Sipia Falls or deeper canyon routes.
Access is on paved and improving gravel roads from Arequipa — roughly 9–10 hours of combined driving depending on conditions. The road can deteriorate after heavy rains between January and March. Confirm current conditions with locals at the plaza before heading deeper into the reserve. No reservations — just show up and pay a small nominal fee at the municipalidad.
