BLM Ballarat Ghost Town Dispersed Area

Dispersed Camping

Historic ghost town ruins at the base of the Panamint Mountains with dispersed camping opportunities along the old mining roads. A few weathered structures remain from this 1900s supply depot for nearby mines. Sites are primitive and spread out across the desert floor, with spectacular sunrise views over Death Valley. Popular base camp for exploring nearby Surprise Canyon or heading into the Panamints.

Access via Ballarat Road from Highway 190 (Trona-Wildrose Road). Rough dirt road requiring high-clearance vehicle for the final miles. Water and supplies available seasonally at the tiny store, but don’t count on it. Extremely hot in summer, pleasant in cooler months. Fire restrictions often in effect due to extreme fire danger in the dry desert environment.
