Big Red Simpson Desert
This 40-meter red sand monster is the Simpson Desert’s most photographed dune and a rite of passage for desert crossers. The approach from the east is steep and soft – many rigs get stuck here, especially late in the day when sand temperatures soar. There’s a bypass track around the south side for heavily loaded vehicles or those without confidence. The views from the crest stretch endlessly across red dune country.
Located about 35km west of Birdsville on the French Line. Early morning crossings work best when sand is firmer. Plenty of space to camp nearby if you want to tackle it fresh, but carry water – there’s none here. Recovery points are available if things go sideways, but self-recovery gear is essential.
