Weldborough to Pyengana — Northeast Tasmania Forest and Valley Road via Ringarooma
Myrtle forest, dairy valleys, and old tin-mining ghosts.
This loop connects Weldborough — a blink-and-miss-it former mining settlement on the edge of the Blue Tier Plateau — north to Ringarooma and west to Pyengana via a series of unsealed forestry and farm roads that drop through some of Tasmania’s most lush and overlooked country. The Ringarooma River runs below the road for much of the northern section, and Pyengana is home to the Pyengana Dairy — a 140-year-old cheese-making operation that warrants a stop for entirely non-overland reasons. The forest climbing back up toward Weldborough is dense myrtle and fern, the kind of wet sclerophyll tunnel that closes over the track and leaves you wondering if your map is right.
Most of this route is manageable in a capable high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but after rain the forestry sections turn slick and some creek dips require ground clearance and careful lines — a 4WD is the safer choice. Best run spring through autumn; winter sees both deep mud and low cloud that kills the views. No permits required on most of this route; be aware of active logging operations on state forest sections — check with Sustainable Timber Tasmania for current closures. Fuel in St Helens before heading inland. Mobile coverage is spotty to non-existent on the plateau sections.

Frequently asked questions
Can a stock Prado or 4Runner handle this trail, or does it need a lift?
A stock high-clearance 4WD like a Prado 150 or Patrol handles it fine. The gravel and dirt surfaces are rougher in sections but nothing that demands a lift — just don't try it in a RAV4 or standard AWD wagon.
When does the trail get sketchy in winter?
May through August the upper sections near Weldborough Pass can get icy, boggy, or closed after heavy rain. Sustainable Timber Tasmania manages some of these forest roads and conditions can deteriorate fast — September through April is the reliable window.
Do you need a permit to drive this route or camp along it?
No formal permit is required for the road itself, but some sections run through Sustainable Timber Tasmania managed forest — check their site for any active logging closures before you go. Dispersed camping is possible but you're on your own to verify land boundaries between STT and private grazing land.
What's the hardest section and what actually makes it difficult?
The climb out of the Ringarooma valley toward Weldborough is the roughest stretch — corrugated gravel, tight corners, and loose surface after rain. It's not a rock-crawling challenge, but it's the section that'll rattle your gear loose and punish anyone driving too fast on an unfamiliar road.
How far is the nearest fuel stop, and is there any reliable water on the trail?
St Helens is your last reliable fuel point before heading in — top up there. There are stream crossings on the route that can serve as water sources but treat everything before drinking. Don't count on finding a servo anywhere between Weldborough and Pyengana.
