Most people see the Black Canyon from the paved south rim. A harder and more honest approach runs off US-50 east of Montrose onto the Bureau of Land Management’s Sawmill Road, a two-track that cuts across open sagebrush before threading into the pinyon-juniper breaks above the Gunnison River’s inner gorge. The route tops out on a rough bench with canyon views that would cost you fifty bucks at a national park entrance, then drops toward the ruins of the Swansea Mine and its collapsed ore tramway — a silver operation abandoned in the early 1900s when the ore gave out and the access road gave up. The mine site itself is fragile; look but don’t haul off the hardware.
