Cordillera Apolobamba Circuit – Charazani to Pelechuco
Bolivia's highest and most remote mountain circuit
The Cordillera Apolobamba Circuit penetrates Bolivia’s most remote northern mountains, connecting the traditional Kallawaya healing village of Charazani with Pelechuco through terrain that sees maybe a dozen vehicles per year. The route crosses multiple 4,800-meter passes including Abra Ulla Khasa, threading between glaciated peaks and pristine alpine lakes while following ancient llama caravan routes. These are the mountains where traditional Kallawaya healers still gather medicinal plants, and where condors outnumber tourists by about a thousand to one.
Expert-level difficulty due to extreme altitude, technical rocky sections, and complete isolation. Modified 4WD with low gearing, skid plates, and expedition preparation mandatory. Dry season only (June-August) – the passes are snowed in otherwise. No facilities, fuel, or rescue services for 200+ kilometers. Carry everything including medical oxygen. What you get is Bolivia’s last completely wild mountain range, authentic indigenous culture, and bragging rights to one of South America’s most challenging and least-traveled high-altitude circuits.
