Spring Creek Campground — Rio Grande National Forest

Spring Creek Campground is a small, no-frills Rio Grande National Forest site tucked into the pines along Spring Creek about 5 miles northeast of Lake City off CO-149. Sites are shaded, spread out enough to feel private, and the creek noise at night makes it worth the minimal fee. Pit toilets on-site, fire rings at each site, but no drinking water — haul your own. It sits around 9,000 feet so nights get cold fast even in July. Expect moderate traffic on summer weekends given proximity to the Lake City area, but nothing like the crowds farther north.

Access is straightforward — CO-149 is paved to the turnoff, and the campground spur is a short gravel road manageable by any vehicle. Season runs roughly June through October depending on snowpack. No reservations; first-come, first-served. Check with the Divide Ranger District on current fire restrictions before you strike a match.
