Rio Grande National Forest — Jarosa Mesa Road Dispersed Camp

Jarosa Mesa sits just east of the CO-149 corridor between Slumgullion Pass and Spring Creek Pass, accessed via FR 523 off the highway. This is high-country dispersed camping at its most straightforward — park it on the mesa, step out, and you’ve got 360-degree San Juan views with no neighbors and no fee. Elevation sits around 11,000 feet, which keeps the bugs light and the temperatures honest even in July. Sites are open meadow pullouts; no trees overhead means night sky views are exceptional.

FR 523 is a maintained USFS two-track, manageable for stock 4WD rigs with decent clearance. The road can be soft after snowmelt or heavy rain — early-season mud is a real consideration. Snow can fly here any month, so check forecasts. No water on the mesa; tank up in Lake City before you head out. Standard 14-day USFS stay limit applies. This one is on the radar of hunters in September and October, so expect company during archery and rifle seasons.
