Mill Creek Campground — Gunnison National Forest

Mill Creek Campground is a compact USFS site off CO-149 south of Lake City, set in a mixed conifer drainage along its namesake creek. It’s not glamorous — think utilitarian sites, vault toilets, fire rings, and no frills — but it puts you close to the Lake City trailhead network and keeps you out of the crowded in-town options. Good choice for overlanders rolling in late who want to wake up already pointed toward the backcountry. Capacity is small; if you arrive after noon on a Friday in July, you may find it full.

Access off CO-149 is straightforward and paved nearly to the entrance. Any rig makes it in. No drinking water on site — treat from the creek or carry in. Season typically runs late May through early October. Cell signal is poor to nonexistent in the drainage.
