Slumgullion Campground — Gunnison National Forest

Slumgullion Campground sits at the edge of the pass on CO-149, tucked into dense spruce-fir forest about 6 miles south of Lake City. Sites are well-spaced, mostly shaded, and catch afternoon thunderstorms hard — that’s the deal at elevation. It’s a legit base for running the Alpine Loop or staging for Engineer and Cinnamon passes. Expect it to fill on summer weekends; mid-week you’ll have breathing room. Fire rings, vault toilets, no hookups. Water available from a hand pump when it’s running — confirm with the Gunnison NF office before counting on it.

Access is paved right to the entrance off CO-149. Any vehicle makes it in. Season typically runs late May through mid-October depending on snowpack. Cell service is essentially nonexistent up here — plan accordingly.
