Talihina Recreation Area Campground — Ouachita National Forest

This is your logical base camp on the western end of any Ouachita high-country run out of Talihina. Managed by the Ouachita National Forest, the campground sits close to town with basic developed amenities — fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets. It’s not a wilderness experience, but it’s a solid, legal, established spot to stage before punching into the ridgeline roads east toward Brushy Creek and the Lonesome Pine corridor. Gets moderate use from hunters and local families on weekends.

Access from Talihina is straightforward off US-271. Season runs spring through fall, though the area stays accessible most of the year barring ice events. Cell signal is spotty to partial depending on your carrier. Confirm current status with the Choctaw Ranger District before heading out.
