Death Valley National Park — Emigrant Canyon Road Upper Dispersed Camp

Emigrant Canyon Road climbs from Emigrant Junction on CA-190 up into the Panamint Range, passing through pinyon-juniper country before the terrain opens toward the crest. NPS allows dispersed camping in the backcountry zones along this corridor, and the upper sections offer cooler temperatures, shade from the pinyons, and elevation relief from the valley heat below. No infrastructure at all — you’re on your own out here. Popular with serious overlanders using this as a base for Wildrose Peak and Charcoal Kilns exploration.

The road is paved from Emigrant Junction to Wildrose Campground, then transitions to graded dirt on the upper sections toward Mahogany Flat. Dispersed camping must comply with NPS backcountry rules: minimum 1 mile from paved road, 100 feet from water, and camp on previously disturbed ground where possible. Fire restrictions vary by season — often no campfires at all in summer. Confirm current restrictions at the Furnace Creek Visitor Center or online before heading in.
