Never Summer Mountains — Thunder Pass Viewpoint

Thunder Pass sits on the Continental Divide at the northern edge of Rocky Mountain National Park, right where the Never Summer Mountains meet the Kawuneeche Valley. From the pass itself you get a full panoramic read on the terrain you’re working through — the Colorado River headwaters corridor below, the Never Summer peaks rising north, and the Grand Ditch cutting its horizontal scar across the hillside. It’s a legit orientation point for anyone running the Bowen Gulch to Grand Ditch corridor.

Access from the west side comes off the Michigan Ditch/Grand Ditch road network — expect a rough, rocky 2-track with no turnaround room once you’re committed. The pass is well inside NPS jurisdiction, so no camping at the viewpoint itself. Best window is July through September; snowpack can block access into late June. Cell service is nonexistent up here.
