Arapaho National Forest — Bowen Gulch Trailhead Road Dispersed Camp

Forest Road 634 runs north from County Road 491 toward the Bowen Gulch Trailhead, and the dispersed pull-offs scattered along its length are some of the least-crowded camp spots within 20 miles of Grand Lake. You’re sitting at roughly 9,000–9,500 feet in dense Engelmann spruce and subalpine fir, with Bowen Creek audible if you’re close enough to the drainage. No fire rings, no signs, no services — just flat-ish pockets in the trees and a real sense of wilderness edge. Expect company on summer weekends; shoulder season is the move.

Access is a dirt and rough-dirt two-track from the paved CR 491 junction. High-clearance 2WD handles it dry; after rain it gets soft. Snow closes this corridor by November and it doesn’t reliably reopen until late May. Standard 14-day USFS stay limit applies. Check Arapaho & Roosevelt NF fire restrictions before building any fire — this zone sees seasonal bans regularly.
