Wheeler Peak Campground — Great Basin National Park

Wheeler Peak Campground is the high-country option inside Great Basin National Park, sitting at around 9,886 feet on the flank of Nevada’s second-highest peak. Sites are set among Engelmann spruce and limber pine — actual shade, actual alpine air, and dead quiet on weekdays. It’s a first-come setup with vault toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables. About 37 sites total. Expect cold nights even in August and possible afternoon thunderstorms. The bristlecone pine grove trailhead is a short walk from camp.

The road up to Wheeler Peak Campground is paved all the way — high clearance not required, but the road is narrow and winding. Plan to arrive before noon in summer if you want a site on a Friday or Saturday. No water hookups; potable water available seasonally at the campground. Season typically runs June through September depending on snowpack. Zero cell signal up here.
