Ruta del Desierto de Atacama – San Pedro to Calama Circuit

Atacama's flamingo circuit through the world's driest desert

Moderate

The dirt roads between San Pedro de Atacama and Calama cut straight through the heart of the world’s driest desert, passing flamingo-filled lagoons and steaming geysers at 14,000 feet. This circuit connects the tourist hub of San Pedro with the mining town of Calama via backcountry routes through Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos, hitting the Tatio Geysers at dawn and looping back through the salt flats near Salar de Atacama. The washboard dirt gets rough between the geysers and the main highway, and altitude hits hard around Tatio.

Moderate difficulty demands high-clearance 4WD for the washboard sections and river crossings near the geysers. Best tackled April through September when temperatures drop below brutal. Carry extra water, fuel for 300+ miles, and warm gear for freezing pre-dawn geyser visits. No permits needed for the main route, but camping is limited to designated areas. You’ll see more flamingos and vicuñas than people, plus some of the clearest night skies on the planet.
