Uncompahgre National Forest — Columbine Pasture Dispersed Camp

Drop off the main Divide Road onto any of several two-track spurs near the Columbine area on the western plateau and you’ll find wide, flat meadow benches with unobstructed views down into Escalante Canyon and the Gunnison River drainage beyond. Wildflower season in late June and July is something else — hip-deep blues and yellows in every direction. No facilities, no fee, no neighbors most nights. Standard dispersed rules apply: 300 feet from water, stay on existing disturbed ground, pack it out. Capacity is self-limiting by the number of pullouts, but this area rarely stacks up.

Best accessed via the Delta or Montrose side, climbing FR 402 variants toward the plateau rim. The road transitions from gravel to rough two-track on the western spur routes — high clearance recommended, 4WD advisable on the secondary tracks. Hunting season in September and October brings ATVs and big-game hunters; the plateau fills up considerably. Check GMUG fire closures before any visit — the plateau sits in fire-prone terrain and seasonal restrictions are real.
