Uncompahgre National Forest — Divide Road Dispersed Camp

Forest Road 402, the main spine road across the Uncompahgre Plateau, opens up a string of pullouts and flat benches where overlanders can drop anchor without a reservation or fee. Sites sit in a mix of open sage parks and aspen groves at elevation, with wide views west toward canyon country. No developed infrastructure — you’re packing in everything and packing out your trash. Fire restrictions are common mid-summer; check with the Montrose Ranger District before you light anything. This corridor gets moderate weekend use from locals but rarely feels crowded on weeknights.

Access from Montrose heads south on Dave Wood Road then climbs to the plateau via Divide Road. High-clearance 2WD handles it in dry conditions; wet weather turns the clay surface into a skating rink. Snow can linger into late May and arrives early in October. No water on the plateau — tank up in Montrose or Naturita before you head up.
