Chatanika Gold Camp Campground — Steese Highway Mile 28
Chatanika Gold Camp (also known as the old F.E. Gold Camp) sits at roughly Mile 28 of Steese Highway. It operates as a private campground attached to a historic gold dredge property. It’s one of the only spots on the Steese corridor where you can get water, a meal, and a flat site without driving all the way back into Fairbanks. The vibe is funky Interior Alaska roadhouse — think wall tents, old equipment, and a crowd that’s a mix of miners, hunters, and people passing through.
It’s private land so confirm current operation and rates before banking on it — management and hours in small Alaska roadhouses change more than you’d like. Use it as a bail-out resupply or a first-night camp before committing to Nome Creek Road. Steese Highway access is paved to the driveway.
