Estes Park — Fall River Entrance and Town Gateway Viewpoint

Estes Park sits at 7,522 feet where the Big Thompson River spills out of the mountains onto the Front Range bench. The drive in on US-34 through the Big Thompson Canyon is legitimately dramatic — sheer canyon walls, a river running alongside the road, and then the sudden opening into the Estes valley with the Never Summer Range behind it. This is your last real resupply point before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park, and it’s got everything: fuel, groceries, gear shops, restaurants, and lodging. It’s touristy as hell in summer but it works.

The Fall River entrance station to RMNP sits just northwest of town. Timed entry reservations are required May through October — book ahead or arrive before 9am. The corridor along US-34 and US-36 through town gives you views of the eastern park face that are worth slowing down for on the way in or out.
