Bear Lake — Rocky Mountain National Park Terminal Lakeshore
Bear Lake is the hub of the entire Glacier Gorge and Longs Peak corridor. The lake itself is postcard-perfect — deep green water, surrounded by spruce and fir, with Hallett Peak and Tyndall Glacier stacked up behind it. It’s the launch point for routes to Nymph, Dream, and Emerald Lakes, and the lower approach to Glacier Gorge. For overlanders using the Glacier Gorge trailhead system, you’ll drive past or through this area on every run. The parking situation is genuinely brutal in summer — the lot fills by 7am on any clear day and a shuttle system runs from the Park and Ride.
The road in is paved and accessible to any vehicle but closes to personal vehicles when lots fill — you’ll ride the shuttle or park at the Glacier Gorge junction. Winter access via snowshoe or ski is world-class. No dispersed camping anywhere near here; this is full NPS managed territory.
