Roosevelt National Forest — Coulson Gulch Dispersed Camping

Dispersed Camping

Coulson Gulch Road (Forest Road 119) cuts into the Roosevelt National Forest south of Estes Park and offers legitimate dispersed camping on USFS land — tall ponderosa and lodgepole pine, no fee, no designated sites, just pull off where you fit. The feel is remote enough to breathe but you’re 20 minutes from town. No toilets, no water, no trash service. Pack everything in and out. Fire restrictions follow Colorado Front Range seasonal closures — check with Boulder Ranger District before you burn anything.

The road is rough dirt and passable to high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions; after rain or snow it gets slick and narrow. Seasonal closure typically lifts by late May. Cell signal drops out fast once you’re in the gulch. Stay limit is 14 days per USFS standard. Confirm current road status with the Boulder Ranger District before rolling in.
