Alabama Hills Recreation Area — Movie Road Dispersed Camp

The Alabama Hills are the real deal — rounded orange granite boulders, natural arches, and that iconic Sierra Nevada backdrop that’s been in more Westerns than John Wayne. Movie Road loops through the heart of it, and the BLM-managed land on either side is open for dispersed camping with no fee and a 14-day limit. Pull-throughs are easy for rigs of any size on the flatter spots. Weekends fill up fast May through October, especially near the named arches — Mobius, Lathe, Lone Ranger. Get there Thursday evening if you want your pick.

Movie Road itself is well-graded dirt, accessible to any 2WD. Owens Valley wind can be punishing in spring. Zero shade, zero water on-site. Lone Pine is 3 miles east — full resupply, fuel, and decent cell signal there. Fire restrictions follow Inyo County BLM seasonal rules; check before you light a match.
