Erg Chebbi — Grand Dune Sea Southern Approach Viewpoint

Coming in from the south on the piste toward Merzouga, the moment the hammada breaks and the orange wall of Erg Chebbi appears ahead of you is one of those overland moments you don’t forget. The dunes here rise to around 150 metres, and in the early morning or late afternoon light they glow a deep amber that photographs can’t do justice to. This is the clearest vantage point for the full southern face of the erg before you drop into the soft sand margins closer to the dune base. No facilities, no crowds this far south — just wind, sand, and silence.

The piste surface is predominantly compacted hammada and gravel with sandy sections that can shift after storms. 4WD required. Tyre pressures should be dropped before pushing closer to the dune base. Best in October through March when temps are manageable and the sand colour is richest.
