Mask of Sorrow — Magadan GULAG Memorial Monument

Perched on a hill above Magadan with the bay and mountains as backdrop, the Mask of Sorrow is a 15-meter brutalist concrete sculpture by Soviet-era artist Ernst Neizvestny, unveiled in 1996 to commemorate the millions who suffered and died in the Kolyma GULAG system. The face weeps smaller faces — a gut-wrenching piece of public art that earns its place. This is mandatory context for anyone running the R504. The scale and isolation of the monument hits differently when you know you’re about to drive the road those prisoners built with their lives.

Located on Krutaya Gora hill, accessible via paved road from central Magadan — short steep climb but any vehicle makes it. Small parking area at the top. No fee. Open year-round. Combine with time at the nearby GULAG History Museum in town for a full picture before departure.
