Kolyma Highway — Palatka River Terrace Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

About 90 kilometers north of Magadan on the R504 Kolyma Highway, the Palatka River valley opens up and offers flat, gravel-bar terraces on the river’s edge where rigs have been pulling off for decades. No facilities, no signage — just open sky, a clear fast-running river, and the kind of silence that hits you hard after Magadan’s sprawl. Truck traffic on the Kolyma is real, so push off the highway proper and get down to the terrace. Firewood is scarce in the open valley; pack your own or grab from the taiga edge upstream.

Access is straightforward from the paved and gravel sections of the R504. The river is clean and cold — treat before drinking. Season runs June through September; spring breakup and October snow make the terraces treacherous outside that window. Cell signal is effectively zero past the Palatka settlement.

First night out of Magadan on the Bones.
