Funningur — Eysturoy Fjordhead Village and Funningsfjørður Viewpoint Trailhead

Trailhead

Funningur sits at the inner terminus of Funningsfjørður on Eysturoy, one of the islands’ most geologically striking fjords. The village is small — a church, a handful of houses, a gravel pull-off — but the trailhead access into the ridgeline above is what brings people here. Hikers and lightweight overlanders use this as the launch for traverses toward Slættaratindur and the broader Eysturoy high country. The fjord views looking seaward from the lower slopes are among the best in the island group.

No facilities on-site. The road into Funningur from the main Eysturoy ring road is paved but narrow with passing places — take it slow. No designated camping in the village; plan to sleep at Klaksvík or carry your own overnight kit for ridge camping above the treeline. Cell signal is partial at village level and drops on the ridge. Best season is June through August for dry trail conditions.
