Ruta Provincial 17 – Quebrada del Condorito
Technical granite canyons with guaranteed condors
This rugged mountain circuit in Córdoba’s Sierras Grandes pushes through narrow canyons where condors nest in towering granite walls, their wingspans casting shadows across the rocky track below. The route demands precise line selection through boulder fields and multiple creek crossings that can rage during summer storms. Key waypoints include the challenging ascent past Cascada de los Condoritos and the technical rock garden approach to Cerro Los Gigantes, where granite spires rise directly from the valley floor.
This is serious technical 4WD territory requiring good approach and departure angles, plus rock sliders for the inevitable granite contact. Experienced drivers only – the exposure on some sections leaves no room for error. March through May offers the most stable weather and creek levels, though condor activity peaks in August-September. No permits needed, but inform someone of your route – cell service disappears completely once you drop into the quebradas. The payoff is camping beneath some of Argentina’s most dramatic granite formations with guaranteed condor sightings and waterfalls that most tourists never see.
