Ruta Provincial 43 – Antofagasta de la Sierra Loop

Volcanic moonscape at the top of Argentina

Expert

RP 43 loops through some of Argentina’s most isolated volcanic terrain, where the tiny village of Antofagasta de la Sierra sits at 3,350 meters surrounded by active volcanic fields and brilliant blue lagoons. The route threads between Volcán Galán—one of the world’s largest calderas—and a string of high-altitude lakes where three flamingo species feed in mineral-rich waters. Key stops include the boiling thermal field at Campo de Piedra Pómez and Laguna Blanca, where pink flamingos contrast against white salt and black volcanic peaks.

This is expert-level high-altitude desert driving that’ll test both nerve and vehicle preparation. Expect deep sand, loose volcanic rock, and river crossings that can turn treacherous with weather. Fuel range is critical—the loop is over 400 kilometers with zero services. April to October offers the best conditions, though even summer nights drop below freezing. Bring recovery gear, spare parts, and enough food for a week. What you get is arguably Argentina’s most spectacular volcanic landscape, virtually guaranteed solitude, and nights under stars so bright they’ll hurt your eyes.
