The Dark Hedges — Ballymoney Beech Avenue
The Dark Hedges on Bregagh Road near Armoy is one of the most photographed natural features in Ireland — a corridor of ancient beech trees planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family that now arch completely over the narrow lane. The trees are dying slowly; several have already fallen and been removed. What remains is still stunning, especially at dawn before the tour buses arrive. The lane itself is restricted to pedestrian and cyclist access now, with a car park off Bregagh Road.
Located in County Antrim, about 5 kilometres from Armoy and 10 kilometres from Ballycastle. The restriction on through-vehicle traffic is enforced — park at the designated lay-by and walk in. Best light is early morning in autumn when the leaves are turning and the mist sits low. GPS the Bregagh Road car park rather than the trees themselves or you’ll end up on a closed section.
