Slieve League Coastal Cliffside Road — Carrick to Bunglass via Teelin Pass

Europe's highest sea cliffs, earned by road.

Moderate

The road from Carrick through Teelin village and up toward Bunglass on the Slieve League Peninsula is not what Google Maps makes it look like. What starts as a reasonable rural road deteriorates into a single-track shelf road carved into the cliff face above Donegal Bay, with passing places that require calm nerves and accurate wheel placement. The reward at the end is the Bunglass viewpoint — a spot where the Atlantic drops 600 metres straight into the sea below the Slieve League cliffs, among the highest marine cliffs in Europe. Most tourists park at Teelin and walk; overlanders push higher and earn the view properly.

This is technically a Moderate to Difficult drive depending on conditions and traffic — the challenge is width, exposure, and blind corners rather than deep ruts or rock crawling. High clearance isn’t strictly required but a narrower vehicle makes life considerably less stressful. Trailers and roof tents should be considered carefully given the cliff-edge passing places. The road can be genuinely dangerous in high wind or winter ice. Best driven in dry summer months, ideally early morning before tourist foot traffic. No permit required. Killybegs is the nearest fuel stop. Dispersed camping is possible on the lower ground near Teelin. The view from the top is one of the most savage coastal outlooks in the British Isles.
