Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest — Mazama Trailhead and Goat Creek Road Staging Area
Sitting just outside the tiny outpost of Mazama at the base of the North Cascades, this forest road junction and staging area is where rigs air down and drivers swap paper maps before heading up into the Methow high country. It’s not fancy — a gravel pullout with access to USFS road networks leading toward Harts Pass, the PCT corridor, and Goat Creek drainage — but that’s exactly why overlanders use it. Cell signal fades fast once you leave the highway, so sort your navigation here.
Access is straightforward from Highway 20 through Mazama. The road surface transitions from paved to gravel quickly heading north. Early summer can see soft shoulders from snowmelt; late summer brings dust and fire closures. Check the Methow Valley Ranger District before heading out — this zone sees periodic closures in dry years.
Air down here before the Methow backcountry.
