Herb Lake Road — Snow Lake to Herb Lake Landing Mining Corridor
Gold rush ghosts deep in the Manitoba Shield.
Herb Lake Landing was once a legitimate boom town — gold brought men and machinery into this corner of the Shield in the 1930s, and the road that fed the operation still exists, if barely. Running roughly 45 kilometres northeast from Snow Lake along the east shore of Herb Lake, this route is a gravel and dirt slog through dense boreal forest, past floatplane-era landing infrastructure ruins and abandoned mine shafts that you’ll want to keep your kids away from. The road crosses several unnamed seasonal drainages that become genuine water crossings during spring breakup and after heavy rain, and the surface deteriorates significantly the further north you push toward Landing Lake.
This is a remote run that demands a capable high-clearance 4WD, recovery gear, and someone who knows how to use it. Cell service is completely absent once you leave the Snow Lake townsite. Stock up on fuel in Snow Lake — there’s nothing else out here. Best run in late July through September when the ground firms up and the bugs drop to merely annoying levels. What you get for the effort is genuine boreal solitude, exceptional northern pike fishing, and a tangible connection to Manitoba’s mining past that no highway pullout can offer.
