Wanipigow River Road — Bissett to Wanipigow Wilderness Circuit

Shield granite, ghost gold, and zero cell bars.

Difficult

Bissett was a legitimate gold-mining town in the 1930s, and the roads that pushed east from it into the Canadian Shield still carry that rough-hewn character. The Wanipigow River Road runs northeast out of Bissett through black spruce and jack pine, tracing the edge of the Wanipigow River basin before dead-ending in genuine bush. Seasonal creek crossings — particularly the unnamed drainage cuts about 18 km out — will stop low-clearance rigs cold in spring runoff. The road surface alternates between packed gravel, soft clay, and exposed granite shelf, so traction demands change without warning.

High clearance and a proper 4WD are non-negotiable from May through June; by August the clay sections firm up and a capable AWD SUV with good tires can manage most of it. Cell service disappears within 5 km of Bissett and does not return. Fuel up in Lac du Bonnet — Bissett has no reliable supply. This is prime moose, bear, and walleye country, and the Shield scenery along the river corridor earns every rough kilometre. Dispersed camping is available on Crown land throughout.
