Mackenzie Highway North — Fort Simpson to Wrigley via Checkpoint

Mackenzie Valley's loneliest corridor north.

Moderate

Highway 1 north of Fort Simpson is one of the loneliest paved-and-gravel corridors in Canada’s northwest, running roughly 220 km to Wrigley along the eastern bank of the Mackenzie River through unbroken boreal forest and muskeg. The road passes through the tiny fuel stop at Checkpoint — the only services between Fort Simpson and Wrigley — and skirts the edge of the Mackenzie Mountains foothills where the river valley opens into massive braided channels visible from pullouts above the tree line. Spring breakup can leave sections of gravel severely frost-heaved and saturated, and the last stretch into Wrigley drops into low-lying river flats prone to seasonal flooding.

This is a legitimate overland drive rather than a technical 4×4 challenge — most of it is driveable in a stock high-clearance 2WD, but frost heaves and soft shoulders in spring demand respect and slow speeds. Fuel up in Fort Simpson and again at Checkpoint if it’s open; Wrigley has no guaranteed fuel. Cell service disappears completely north of Fort Simpson. A satellite communicator is non-negotiable. Best window is July through September when the road is dry and the Mackenzie River scenery is at its most dramatic. No permit required.
