Nahanni National Park Reserve Boundary Road — Fort Liard to Moose Ponds Trailhead

The Nahanni National Park Reserve boundary approach from Fort Liard is not a trail for people who need cell service or a safety net. You’re tracking northwest from Fort Liard through boreal muskeg and mixed spruce lowlands, following unmaintained resource roads toward the South Nahanni drainage. The route climbs through Tetcela River flats before pressing into the Liard Range foothills — a country of moose, black bear, and zero traffic. The river crossings here are real: the Tetcela and its tributaries run fast in spring and early summer, and there’s no bridge at the final ford. Water levels dictate everything.

This is an expert-level route. You need a lifted, lockers-equipped truck or purpose-built overland rig, a recovery kit you actually know how to use, and a satellite communicator — full stop. Best window is late July through early September when water levels drop and the muskeg firms up. No fuel after Fort Liard; carry a 50-litre reserve minimum. Parks Canada requires registration before entering the park boundary zone.
