Kluane Lake North Shore Road — Pine Lake to Congdon Creek Territorial Campground
Yukon's biggest lake, raw northern shore.
Kluane Lake is the largest lake entirely within Yukon — 408 square kilometres of glacially fed water flanked by the Duke Ridge to the west and the Kluane Ranges to the south. The north shore road runs from the Pine Lake campground area near the Alaska Highway junction at the lake’s southeastern corner, tracking northwest along the exposed gravel bench above the waterline to Congdon Creek Territorial Campground. The surface is maintained gravel for most of the run but deteriorates significantly past the Sulphur Creek washout, where seasonal drainage carves deep ruts across the road bed and high-clearance becomes mandatory. Wildlife density along this corridor is exceptional — grizzly, wolves, and Dall sheep are common sightings, particularly in late summer around the creek mouths.
A stock 4WD with high clearance handles this route in dry conditions; after rain the clay-heavy sections near Congdon Creek turn slick and punishing. There are no fuel stops between Destruction Bay and the Alaska Highway junction at the lake’s south end — fuel up before you leave. Best season is June through September; the road is passable in May but frost heaves are aggressive. Cell service is nonexistent. Congdon Creek Territorial Campground is a proper basecamp with pit toilets and a boat launch. This is an honest taste of Kluane’s scale without the commitment of a full backcountry push.
