Betoota Hotel Ruins

Ghost town remains of Australia's smallest post office and the famous Betoota Hotel — a must-see historical curiosity on the track.

The weathered stone ruins of Betoota Hotel sit lonely in the gibber plains about 180km north of Marree. This was once a thriving settlement with Australia’s smallest post office, a hotel, and a handful of buildings serving travelers on the old stock route. Today just the hotel’s stone walls remain, along with scattered debris and the famous grave of Tom Kruse’s dog.

There’s a cleared area suitable for camping near the ruins, though it’s completely exposed with no shade or facilities. The site gets heavy visitation from grey nomads during winter months. The ruins are fragile — respect the historical significance and don’t climb on the walls.
