Forestry Trunk Road — Hwy 940 Pincher Creek to Crowsnest Pass South

Highway 940 south from Beaver Mines toward the Crowsnest Pass through the Castle Wilderness is among the finest overland drives in southern Alberta, full stop. The route follows the Castle River valley, dipping into the Castle Wilderness Area where the road narrows, the tree cover thickens, and creek crossings come up without much warning. The key waypoint is the main Castle River ford south of Beaver Mines — in spring it’s a serious crossing, by late summer it’s manageable but still demands a read before you commit. The road surface ranges from decent gravel to rutted, rocky two-track depending on maintenance cycles and how recently it rained. The mountains are immediate here — not far off like on the prairies, but right on top of you, with the peaks of the Castle and Carbondale watersheds pressing in from both sides.

A high-clearance 4WD is the minimum — the creek crossings and steep, rocky pitches in the southern section rule out anything without proper ground clearance and 4WD capability. Lifted rigs with AT tires will have a comfortable run; lower setups will be holding their breath. The Castle is a relatively new provincial park/wildland park complex, so check Alberta Parks for current seasonal closures, especially in grizzly management zones. No cell service. Dispersed camping is excellent along the river flats. Best run late June through October — snowmelt keeps the crossings dangerous well into spring. Fuel in Pincher Creek.
