Sowchea Bay Recreation Site — Stuart Lake
Sowchea Bay sits on the south shore of Stuart Lake, one of the largest natural lakes in BC. The site is maintained by the BC Forest Recreation Sites program — expect basic cleared pads, a pit toilet, fire rings, and direct lake access for washing up or filtering water. It’s quiet most weekdays, busier in July and August with local boaters and fishing rigs. Capacity is modest; arrive by noon on summer weekends if you want a spot.
Access is off Highway 27 south of Fort St. James via a short gravel spur — most stock trucks and SUVs handle it fine. No hookups, no garbage service, pack it out. Cell service is essentially nonexistent here. This is your last comfortable camp before pushing north on the Manson Creek Road toward Nation River country.
